If you can't sell a car, why would you *raise* the price?

I saw a few ads on CL that were renewed to raise the price. Why would you do that? If the car isn't selling, it means you should *lower* the price, not raise it!

Right?

Dunno about cars, but we're shopping here in Manhattan for an apartment, and this happens all the time. Apartment sits on the market for a while, disappears, then is relisted lower, or higher. This is only so it appears on your radar again, because you have the websites set to tell you when apartments in your price range come up.

That's called a "price correction" in the Real Estate world. It lends the property a sense of exclusivity. That way us poors don't bother them with offers that might offend.

Yeah, but these are really low-priced cars (under $2000), so they'd still be dealing with da poors

I saw one like that today too.

"New price $x,xxx. If not sold by end of this week will raise price and re-list."

I looked at that and said ya know, if ya hadnt tried to be such a hard ass on the sale with some cheesey tactic I would be calling you right now.

To get the lowballers up to a reasonable negotiating position.

The idea of trying to find a place to live there sounds like my worst nightmare. I know an apartment the size of my closet would be more than I could afford.

750SF and above is generally 800K or so, we're trying to keep it below 700K, but the apartments in the area we want are often awful. But no worries - recall that we have no car payment, no car insurance, no parking costs. That saves us ... 800 bucks a month at least. So we have money to throw at an apartment. This is something I want to see: http://streeteasy.com/building/304-w…

I rented a two bedroom one bath house that was about the same size for $600/month. It wasn't as nice as the apartment in the link.

When I think of buying a home I think of keeping it under $250k but those thoughts will probably be crushed when we actually start looking in the areas we want to be in.

why? it's the seller's car. he or she should be allowed to ask whatever he or she wants.

You don't think raising the price is stupid?

Geeze - when I went to law school in the 90s, I had a studio in Dupont Circle in DC, very nice area, for $550 a month including gas and electric. Wow - those were the days.

I raised the price on an Accord because I wasn't getting any hits and it worked like a charm

usually, yes. but I can understand why some people do it.

I have had multiple times where I went to look at a car, took the price the seller was asking, and then started deducting the cost for a professional mechanic to make repairs/overdue maintenance, only to have the seller decline my final offer and do some of the repairs himself to increase the overall value of the car.

on the other hand, some people need cash ASAP. but if they fail to sell the car quick enough, there's no reason to take less than fair market value.

and some people are just stupid.

but in all cases, there's no reason to flag the ad. flagging is more for "2010 MAXDA 6 $3243" posts.

A little late to reply, but I've raised the price before because I got so many people wanting to buy my car. Raised the price, still had a few interested parties and sold it for more than I originally listed it for.

'72? WTF? It's an "early" IIA, which they stopped making in '68. Not to mention the clear front signals mean it's pre-'67, my money's on '66. Also, that is in really shitty shape for that much - $4950 would be better but not great.
